Amazon.com Product Description The HP Pavilion s3420f Slimline desktop PC gives you all the power of a fully loaded home/office desktop in a sleek, silver-and-black chassis that's one-third the size of a traditional PC tower, enabling you to place it unobtrusively anywhere--from your office to entertainment center to kitchen. The built-in TV tuner (providing both standard NTSC and high-def ATSC transmission) and personal video recorder (PVR) let you watch, pause, rewind, and record live television. An online Electronic Program Guide (EPG) lets you review the TV schedule and select individual episodes or entire series, so you can watch your favorite shows on your own time, at your own convenience. And you can easily burn TV shows and home video to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner (16x for DVD R), which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. LightScribe technology burns custom, silkscreen-quality labels and artwork directly onto LightScribe-enabled discs, right inside the drive. This desktop is powered by the 2.7 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. It features a large-and-in-charge 500 GB hard drive, and it includes an open drive bay for an optional HP Pocket Media Drive (which can add up to 160 GB of storage). Other features include 3 GB of installed RAM (maximum), Nvidia GeForce 6150LE video card with 128 MB of dedicated memory (and up to 1343 MB of available memory), multi-format memory card reader, a wide variety of connectivity options (including both USB 2.0 and Firewire), and digital audio output for home theater surround sound. And thanks to its integrated Wi-Fi capabilities (802.11b/g), you don't need to worry about stringing Ethernet cable from your broadband modem in another room. This desktop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1), which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 5400+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.
This 2.8 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and a 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) - Hard Drive: The 500 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).
This Slimline PC also includes a drive bay that fits an optional HP Pocket Media Drive, which enables you to add up to 160 GB of additional storage. The Pocket Media Drive also works with any USB-enabled PC, for easy transferring of multimedia files from other computers in your home. - Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC2-6400, 2 x 1 GB and 2 x 512 MB) will get you moving, but this desktop has room enough for 8 GB of RAM (4 x 2 GB) to speed along your multimedia and gaming applications. It also offers a top-of-the-line 800 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art. - Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and optical mouse (both PS/2) and remote control.
Video & Audio This desktop features an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics/video card with 128 MB of dedicated memory and up to 1343 MB of available graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista. Nvidia's exclusive TurboCache technology allows direct rendering from the GPU to system memory by leveraging the bi-directional PCI Express bandwidth. The TurboCache Manager dynamically allocates memory for maximum system performance while intelligent software algorithms maximize application performance. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 6 speakers. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This desktop has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. For expansion, this Slimline desktop has one PCI slot (occupied), one PCI x16 Express slot (available), one 5.25-inch external bay (occupied), and two internal 3.5-inch bays (occupied). RUN! November 18, 2008 K. Yates 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased two slimlines about 8 months ago. This is my first negative review to write about any company or product but I am compelled. Both desktops broke down within the first two months within 3 weeks of each other. After a nightmare with their technical support I sent them both back to be repaired. I am now sending them both back again after another nightmarish experience with the overseas technical suppport. Their technical support team claimed that it is because of the small size and compenents. I attempted to see if they would exchange these slimlines for a larger traditional desktop. I was willing to pay more. They would not. Prior to my experience with their technical support and customer service I would have bought another HP. Now I will try another brand.
HP Pavillion S3400F Slimline Computer November 18, 2008 Tony (Rochester, NY, USA) The computer was received promptly which is what I have typically found when ordering through Amazon. This is the first computer I have purchased for some time, I usually build them, but the small size and low price made this impractical. I also found that this was a good way to try out Windows Vista without the pain of a fresh install, not to mention the cost which is only a little less than the price of this computer. All in all the computer works well and appears to be reliable. The only issues I have experienced are due to Vista which would not read my network drive, and had an issue with one or two of my older programs. But for the most part Vista is ok. Getting back to the computer, it is not a machine for someone that wants to adjust performance etc, because the two card slots are not full height so upgrading sound and video will be difficult. However for someone that wants good performance for office applications and average games this is a great space saving machine.HP Pavilion S3420F Slimline Desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core 5400+ Processor, 3 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)
Great Machine! September 24, 2008 R. Remillard (Minneapolis, MN United States) Great price, quite fast, and BluRay works nicely in Media Center. However, the fan is a little too loud, it does not have Wireless N built in (I checked, but I could be wrong), and it should have an eSata port for an external drive to support HD playback. Overall, I am very pleased!
Great computer, flawed though September 7, 2008 Casey Kitty (Cherry Hill, Nj) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this about 3 weeks ago, maybe a bit longer, and the first week i had it i had to call up HP and have it sent in for repairs. Expecting it back in a few days from the repair place. Very pleased with HP's support, not to pleased with the purchase. There shouldnt be any reason I need to send it in for repairs the first week of using it. On the other hand, from what I saw, it works well. The TV connector in the back helps with space, so we only need a monitor, and not a tv, monitor, desk, etc etc. 500 gb of space means i can save my shows and not worry about running out of space. They say 3 gb of RAM, but I got 4. Evidentally they all do, but the computer only utilizes 3 gb, and the other 1 is for cache. Very good computer for the price, just waiting to actually be able to use it! Kind of disappointed, since I have not been able to use the tower, or the monitor i purchased through amazon. Hope it works, and there are no other issues once I get it running.
Great machine August 24, 2008 Maizy J (Massachusetts) I bought this for my small business and it is perfect. It is small and powerful. I highly recommend it.
