Gateway FX6710 - Don't buy! April 5, 2010 J. Kunzman (San Jose, Ca United States) I bought this computer a little over a year ago.
It is actually pretty fast and comes with all the peripherals expected.
However, the mouse is large for my hand, and I have large hands. Function keys F9-F12 are labeled in blue, which are very hard to read. In addition they require you to us the "FN" key to access them. They are "normally" used for play/pause, stop, rewind, and fast forward. The speakers are a token only. The graphics card is decent but isn't a super high end gaming card.
The PC boots out of the box. It is bloated with tons of useless crap. Netzero, Norton trial, Office Student trial version, Wild Tangent Games, Big Fix. etc... Big fix was later not supported by Gateway and you left with no support. The first thing you need to do is start uninstalling all this junk. So it boots yes. Is it usable, no.
Since the initial purchase I have had to reinstall Windows 3 times. No explanations other than it did not boot. It has not recognized the HD on a few occasions, but later does after I pull the drive from the font bay. Windows does a terrible job of multi-threading between processors. More like it does not seem to assign a single thread to a single processor.
The power manager is virtually useless. I set it turn off the monitor and it does not. The same goes for sleep and hibernate. It rarely recovers from hibernate properly. This could be a MS Vista thing, don't know don't care.
Performance is a plus, the reliability is not worth it. I have owned probably a dozen PC's since 1990 and this is probably the least reliable one I have ever owned.
I would only recommend this to people I don't like.

I have owned this PC for 4 months. Good thing its warrantied. Here is the problem. The hard drive crashed. I called for a new one. I am very experienced with diagnosing failures. But, Gateway will not send a replacement HDD. In order to be covered I have to mail the entire PC to Texas at my expense.
Buy a Dell, at least when they sell a unit with a crappy drive they will mail a replacement.

This machine is amazing. I really love the extra hard drive space. Plays anything I throw at it gaming wise with pretty good frame rates.
When I got the shipment and unboxed it the first time, I couldnt get any video out. My one and only complaint is that it took forever to get a replacement. The new machine arrived over a month after my original order was placed, it did however work and I havent had a problem since.

We bought a Gateway desktop and Windows got hosed for some reason. We called 1-800-GATEWAY for support. Guess what? If you buy a Gateway anywhere but their website you must call a separate toll number. WTF!? Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Get HP. Get an abacus. Anything but Gateway.
