Spectacular frame rates! August 19, 2008 Nathan Beauchamp (Oak Park, IL USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I upgraded to this card from a crossfire configuration of two HD3870s. I intend to eventually get another HD4870 and run them in crossfire, but I'm waiting for the drivers to mature a little bit so that scaling is improved. This card rocks. I get 40-50 frames playing Crysis on "high" settings with no AI or AF. In Mass Effect, I get 60+ frames, with everything set to max. Every game, same deal, this card gets awesome frame rates. This card does tend to run hot, but that is easily fixed by tweaking a profile in Catalyst Control Center. I run the fan at 35% and the card in idle is around 48C and 75-80C under load. The advantages of this card over the 4850 are that it has faster GDDR5 memory (the 4850 has GDR3 that operates at a lower frequency). This comes into play on higher end games. It might not be worth the price difference if you're just a casual gamer, but if you're serious about wanting the best price/performance that is out there, the 4870 is a winner. I bought a Sapphire because I've owned their products before and never had an issue, although I suppose most brands these days are about the same.
Incredible card for the price. August 18, 2008 CharlieGone (SB county, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Looking to play some of those newer games with very good frame rates? This card is definitely it. What you get: Pretty much everything in the pictures presented, s-video cable, dvi to hdmi; vga, crossfire connectors, y connectors for those that do not have 2 pci-e connections (you will need them) and video connection (for what I'm not exactly sure). Comes packaged nice and neat and simple instructions on how to install (pretty much drop in the card and install the pcie connections thats it). It also comes with a cd w/ catalyst ati controls so you can overclock (doesn't have crossfire?). Installation on my motherboard require a little bit of moving things. If you have a Dell Inspiron 530 this card will fit, but will be a little tight on the bottom due to the sata connector being under back end of the card. It really isn't a big problem, but just be VERY careful. Also I had to upgrade my psu to 500w as this card will take a significant amount of juice to run. The recommendation is 550 but 500 will do just fine. So far I have played COD4 with no hiccups. 120 to 160 fps on all high settings on a 19" monitor. NO AA either. So, my verdict? Get it if you really want to play certain games with not much trouble... if you just do casual gaming or simple things that do not require much juice, you don't need this card. Get something cheaper. BTW, you might also want to learn about increasing the cards fan speed, since mine was initially running at about 80c's idle! Now it's at 49c's. Good luck and I definitely recommend this.
