5 out of 5 stars A beauty and a beast of a drive   December 27, 2008
Dan (Carmen, San Diego)
I just recently ordered and received this drive to use as a replacement for a intermittently working internal DVD burner on my laptop (I have VERY bad luck with internal laptop DVD burners, which is why I decided to try an external drive this time). I must say I was initially worried about going to a USB connection from the built in drive, but the read and write speeds are FANTASTIC. It burns DVDs and CDs in a flash (I'm using Windows Vista 32bit, which tends to add about 2 minutes to ANYTHING USB related, so it takes about 7 mins to burn a disc at max speed, instead of the Nero says it should). It is a little only the noisy side when it's burning, but that doesn't bother me too much, and it doesn't make too much noise when playing a disc, so you won't need to up your volume just to watch a DVD with it. Not only does it burn fantastic discs (including using DVDs that I'd had three other burners reject), but it is a beautiful looking drive. It has a fantastic mirror finish on the front, and looks nice on the included stand. I must say it was a little bigger and bulkier than I thought it was, but it still fit in the space I wanted to use it in, so I'm not too depressed, it just isn't as portable as I'd like it to be. Also, I do use it standing up, and have had no problems with discs falling out upon insertion OR automatic opening after burning a disc. This is something I was worried about, but have had no troubles with. I can't say anything about the drive's longevity yet, since I've only had it a little over a day (I tested it pretty thoroughly in that day though, haha), but I've heard good things both on this site and on others, about this particular model and Sony drives in general, so I'm hoping it lasts longer than my internal drives usually do. All in all a fantastic product for home use, and fine to travel if you use a suitcase, but otherwise you way want to consider getting a separate bag (from your laptop bag) to carry it in, if you have plans to travel with it.

1 out of 5 stars Software package is demo version, only last 30days   December 25, 2008

DRX840U worked for 1 month, then stopped, found out from Sony tech support that I need to buy additional $60.00 worth software to restore functionality.
Product was sold to me without declaration that it is a demo version only and will stop function 30 days after the purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Died under warranty, replacement low quality.   December 24, 2008

The internal drive that came with my HP Windows Vista computer is not a good recorder. So I bought the Sony DRX-830U (2007 model) to use instead. Shortly before the year warranty expired, the motor in the Sony started making horrible squealing noises. The disc would sometimes still be spinning rapidly on the loading tray after eject. (This, of course, could easily scratch/damage a disc.) So I returned it to Sony under warranty, and did get a free replacement DRX-840U (current model) within about 5 days. Very impressive turn around time.
However, after running disc quality scans on discs recorded with the new Sony drive, I found it makes low quality discs using any discs except those with a manufacturer ID of CMC magnetics. This drive is just too picky about which discs you use. (The burns may be successful and discs may play, but disc quality scans using Nero DiscSpeed tools reveal low quality scores.) What's funny is Sony's own brand of discs perform the worst in this drive.
So I gave up on Sony DVD/CD drives.

4 out of 5 stars DRX840U Good experience so far   December 22, 2008
F. Welch (Rochester, NY)
Having only used it to burn two discs I have limited input but I was able to get through the process with very few problems. The burner did not work when I attempted to back up jpeg files without using NERO. Once I followed the procedure for NERO I was able to copy and protect my entire photo collection on one disc....almost full right to the end. So far so good.

4 out of 5 stars iMac Compatible   December 16, 2008
Cowboy (Out West)
We had to use another burner for a project and our iMac worked with this Sony just fine without any additional software or drivers. There were one or two times it acted quirky after burning a music CD but opening and then closing the drive to refresh its status seems to tweak the iMac O.S. to recognize the fresh newly burned/pressed/minted CD. But that was all.

Otherwise, it worked as expected.
