Amazon.com Product Description
The NETGEAR WPN824 RangeMax Wireless Router offers:
  • Advanced MIMO technology that delivers greater speed and range compared to standard 802.11g
  • Enhanced security with support for WPA 128-bit WEP encryption
  • Backwards compatibility with 802.11b networks
The NETGEAR WPN824 RangeMax Wireless Router lets you easily set up a wireless network in your home so you can share a single internet connection with everyone in your household or office at speeds up to 108 Mbps. Using MIMO technology, the access point offers superior range and eliminates "dead spots" in your home or office.

The WPN824 has an elegant design with no unsightly antennas. View larger.
Beautiful Design and Easy Setup
The WPN824 is a very attractive unit with a white exterior and rounded edges. An included plastic stand lets you stand the router on its edge to take up less space. Since the antennas are built in, there are no protrusions extending out of the case, maintaining a clean, elegant form factor. A vertical stand is included for more placement options.

The WPN824 makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your DSL modem, cable modem, or other network connection into the router. An installation wizard guides you through the setup process step-by-step.

The WPN824 employs a web-based interface for configuration, and the router will automatically do the initial setup by getting your DNS settings and determining your IP address. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your router will always be up-to-date.

Fast and Secure
The WPN824 supports the 802.11g standard but extends it with Smart MIMO technology that incorporates intelligent internal antennas, allowing it to detect interference from home devices such as microwaves, and adjusting itself accordingly. The upshot is speeds up to 108 Mbps with a longer range and a lack of "dead zones" in your home. When used with NETGEAR's adapters, it can provide up to 500,00 square feet of uninterrupted coverage. You will see the difference when you download music, stream video, or make internet telephone calls. If you still have computers that use 802.11b, don't fret as the router is backwards compatible with the older wireless standard and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network and the WGR614 will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.

Smart MIMO technology automatically adapts for interference from devices such as cordless phones and microwaves.

In addition to wireless access, there are four 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet ports in the back for connecting computers to the network via a fast wired connection.

The WPN824 offers many security options to ensure your data is private. Double firewall protection keeps your network shielded from outside attacks and Network Address Translation (NAT) hides your PCs and files from outside snoopers. To ensure the security of your wireless data, both 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption is available, as well as WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). You can also use MAC address authentication to allow only authorized users onto the network and Wireless Access Control (SSID) to identify authorized wireless network devices.

Keep Tabs on Kids
This router is an especially good choice for parents as it allows settings to log all sites that are visited, lets you block specific sites based on whether it contains specific keywords, and lets you set time schedules for certain computers to work.

The NETGEAR WPN824 RangeMax Wireless Router is backed by a 1-year warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Good Little Router   January 4, 2009
Stanley T
I have had no issues with this router in the 6 months that I've had it. I've found it much more reliable than the older 801.11b Netgear router that I had (WGR614) which used to drop connections. I also test drove the D-Link WBR-1310 Wireless G Router prior to purchasing this router and eventually went with the Netgear.

Features that I like:
The UPnP feature works flawlessly: I have a Windows Home Server which gives me access to my LAN (RDP, file transfer over http etc) and Bittorrent. All these have were successfully set up on the router with UPnP and I didn't have to fiddle around with opening ports etc. This didn't work on my old Netgear or the DLink that I considered buying.

Setting up wireless options is a breeze. I use WPA-PSK + TKIP as my authentication/encryption and it works fine for about 3 wireless constantly connected and occasional friends visiting.

No issues getting to my corporate VPN server.

One feature I like is the static assignment of IP addresses via the MAC address. This guarantees that the machines in my house that I want to get the same IP address will, even though the computers are using DHCP. The DLink doesn't have this feature.

The admin site works well. It is a little dated, but functional and snappy. There is a little McAfee add which I just ignore. I haven't tested the child-proofing features like blocking certain sites and scheduling browsing times so cannot comment on those aside from saying they exist.

The big blue light on the side of the router was annoying, but after upgrading to the latest firmware you have an option to turn it off. Thank goodness!

I also have it set up to stream music and lower resolution video wirelessly to my XBox 360 (Media Extender). This works well but I can't do live TV nor HDTV yet. I'm not sure how a wired connection would work.

All in all, I'm very happy with this product. A lot happier than I have been with Netgear in the past. I also did buy this router as an open box at a *substantial* discount and it continues to chug along fine.

Nitpicks:
* The back of the router doesn't label the ethernet LAN ports. Instead you have to look at the numbers at the front. Also the internet (WAN) isn't labelled either.
* It is a little chunky.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   January 4, 2009

I have had this router for about 4 years- still very impressed. Thinking about buying a new router for my one N device but am worried to mess with a good thing. Have had a problems with some other Netgear products but not this one. If you just want G- I would highly recommend. I use AT&T DSL/Speedstream 5100 modem, 3PC/1MAC/WII/ROKU/2IPHONE. I use a Dynamic DNS service with this device so I don't need to have pay for a static IP- has worked great as well.

1 out of 5 stars VERY PROBLEMATIC   January 1, 2009
J. Fazio (Nassau County, New York)
I've had nothing but bad experience with Netgear products and this item is no exception. I've been using it for over a year. It delivers pretty good range as advertised but unfortunately causes a lot of irritating network anomolies such as random network slowdowns, IP address conflicts, unavailability of wireless access, incompatibility issues with other network equipment (particularly the Verizon FIOS modem/router). A hard reboot of the router will resolve most of these issues until they inevitably and unpredictably surface again. Needless to say, rebooting the router is a real pain in the neck. I finally got fed up with this router and replaced it with a comparable D-Link model that has performed flawlessly.

5 out of 5 stars Best Router Yet A++++   December 29, 2008

I bought this router and i thought i splurged a little but the extra money is well worth it i get a strong fast signal everywhere in my 2 story house with the router in the basement ive previously owned a dlink and linksys and this is the best of them all very easy setup and it worked as soon as i plugged it in i highly recommend buying this router

5 out of 5 stars Works great, but setup is not for newcomers   December 22, 2008
A. J. Robb (Los Angeles, CA)
I installed a WPN802 for a family friend, and once it was up and running, it worked (and is working) incredibly well. The friend was new to wireless networking, so he wanted me to walk him through what I was doing during setup.

Having read the reviews that the setup CD and wizard are useless, we just set it up from the built-in firmware. I didn't have any problem with it, but my friend was not really able to follow along too easily, because so much of the setup was so backward and non-intuitive, and had to guess much of how it worked on my own.

For example, the "Updating Settings" screen often never goes away, and you generally have to refresh the page (other firmwares are much better about this, but I guess I shouldn't expect much from stock firmware on VxWorks).

When you change the the device's IP address, there's no warning that you'll need to reconnect to it via its new IP (again, other firmwares are better about this).

In order to add computers to its MAC filter whitelist, you need to turn off the filter, join the open network, scan the network so that it picks up all available devices, add them, then close the network back up (again, other firmwares are better about this).

If I had to set this up 4-5 years ago on my own, I wouldn't have been able to get through it. The only reason I could was because I've been setting up routers lately, and basically know how they work. My friend, who was watching, would have been completely lost.

Now that it's up and running, it's covering an entire large house of questionable construction from a far corner in a lower level. So thumbs up for Rangemax technology, thumbs down for the firmware and setup process.
