Product Description Turn your computer into a personal digital entertainment system! The USB 5.1 Audio Adapter from Cables To Go enables you to generate Dolby Digital or DTS Surround Sound through your desktop or laptop. Now you can listen to your MP3 and WMA files that are on your PC through your stereo receiver. Get the clarity of an expensive 5.1 sound card with easy to use, cost-effective USB technology. This attractive audio adapter connects your computer to your mini disc recorder, receiver, amplifier, portable stereo, or PC multimedia speakers delivering full 5.1 sound. In digital playback mode, the USB 5.1 Audio Adapter receives an audio stream from your PC via the USB interface. Didn't work for me December 11, 2007 P. Karlin 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I found getting 5.1 surround sound out of my computer and into my AV receiver to be a difficult process. I needed to go USB out to SPDIF in on the receiver. I was never able to get this device to work. I've returned it and bought a Creative Soundblaster Live which works great. My theory as to the problem is this: according to Creative, the analog output must be 5.1 channel, and it must be disabled for the digital passthrough to work. The Soundblaster has its own control panel in which to enable/disable the analog. This device runs off the Generic Windows Audio driver, and does not have its own control panel. It has a stereo analog output for headphones, which cannot be disabled. I did get fine 2 channel sound out of it, but never 5.1. I don't know if the fact that the PC is running Vista had anything to do with my problem. The actual manufacturer of this device by the way, is SIIG. Their website is almost as unhelpful as Cables to Go's. I've given it 2 stars because it must work for someone, and I can't be sure there wasn't something else going on with my system. I can say with great assurance however that there are much better solutions out there.
USB audio adapter April 21, 2006 David Ewing 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This product is useful if you wish to connect your laptop to your home audio system. The USB/optical interface eliminates the need of utilizing the 3.5mm mini stereo plug audio output common with inexpensive laptop computers. The adapter ships with a Toslink and USB cable, the combined length of which is approximately 3m. Any open USB port may be used. Included is DVD software. With Windows XP the product self-installed.
